I always get asked about various skincare and makeup products that I use. Which ones are worth using and which ones are worth skipping? Makeup primers fall in that category of “not sure if I need it or not” product. Well, I’m here to tell you that, yes, you need a primer. And here are the reasons why.

Primer keeps your makeup from sliding off in extreme temperatures, especially in hot and humid weather when makeup just seems to disappear the minute you walk outside. Primer helps makeup wear longer.

Primer preps your skin for foundation and concealer, giving it a smooth canvas, and making it look as perfect as possible by filling in pores. Depending on whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, you may choose powder, gel or cream primers. I personally like gel ones, but try all three types to see what works best for you.

Some primers have anti-aging benefits. Not all, but quite a few primers have anti-aging ingredients like green tea, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and grape seed extract. Regular use will boost your anti-aging efforts, resulting in younger looking skin over time.

Primer makes you look younger. By filling in pores and fine lines, and by covering up acne, makeup primer literally blurs the skin’s imperfections. As if you needed any other reason.

Primer evens out your skin tone. Redness? Dullness? Not after applying primer. Using makeup primer before applying foundation allows you to not overdo the foundation or powder, which can end up looking cakey and actually settling into your pores, magnifying them.

Think of makeup primer as a thin veneer you put over your skin to keep it smooth and poreless. It applies easily, perfects your skin and can even help with anti-aging. Because it has so many benefits, I highly recommend daily primer use.
